What If

What if you didn’t delight in revenge
     creating fake consequences
     for imagined inconvenience

A dangerous game

What if you supported my dreams
     hadn’t lost interest
     when the sugar dissolved

trying to escape without injury

What if you didn’t move out
while I was traveling for work

after the glass slipped from my grip

What if you didn’t lie
     to both of us
when you said you loved me

and shattered on kitchen floor

What if I didn’t go silent
     whenever something difficult
     needed to be said

and me standing there bare-footed

What if I realized I loved you
     before you were gone

not knowing what to do next
